Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses
Local SEO starts with making it easy for people and search engines to understand what you do, where you do it, and why the page is useful.
1. Make the service area explicit
State the cities, neighborhoods or region you genuinely serve where that information helps a customer decide. Do not create misleading location claims for places where you do not operate.
2. Keep core business information consistent
Use accurate business name, contact information, hours and location details across the public places you control. Correct stale information instead of multiplying listings.
3. Build location pages only when they are useful
A location page should contain real information for customers in that area: services offered, constraints, examples, logistics or other locally relevant details. Avoid near-duplicate doorway pages.
4. Answer local buying questions
Useful content can address service areas, scheduling, pricing approach, delivery radius, seasonal issues and other questions that genuinely differ by location.
5. Earn reviews honestly
Ask real customers for candid reviews where appropriate. Never fabricate reviews or selectively misrepresent customer experiences.
6. Inspect the actual search results
Search the queries a prospective customer would use and note what kinds of pages appear. Use that point-in-time evidence to understand intent and information gaps rather than assuming a keyword guarantees demand.
7. Prioritize the next few actions
Turn observations into a short sequence: correct inaccurate information, improve the most important service page, answer a high-value customer question, then measure what changes.
